How Heat Pump Systems Both Cools and Heats

People are curious about how a heat pump is able to be both a heating and air conditioning system. It’s actually simple to explain—although a heat pump is anything but a simple machine!

A heat pump is essentially a type of air conditioning system: it runs from the same principle of circulating chemical refrigerant between a set of indoor and outdoor units, evaporating to absorb heat from indoors and then condensing to release the heat outdoors. The difference with a heat pump is the ability to reverse the direction of the refrigerant flow so the system instead absorbs heat from outdoor and releases it indoors, keeping you warm.

Why You Might Consider a Heat Pump Installation

Aside from the straightforward convenience of having a two–in–one year–round comfort system, what are the other reasons you might contact us to arrange for a heat pump installation? There are a few advantages to consider:

  • Safety: Using a heat pump for heating is a good option if you don’t want a natural gas system in your house. The exterior cabinet of a heat pump doesn’t even get warm when it’s working!
  • Energy savings: The air conditioning mode for the heat pump is the same efficiency as most standard ACs. But the heating mode improves tremendously in efficiency because it takes less power to move heat compared to creating it through electrical resistance the way an electric furnace does.
  • Ideal for Florida: Heat pumps may sometimes struggle when the temperature outdoors becomes too cold. That’s a rare occurrence in Florida, however!
